Kratom Explained
The botanical name for this tree is Mitragyna speciosa and it will be found growing in Southeast Asia. Using the leaves of kratom as an herbal medicine has been done since forever by the people there. There are many uses for this such as a treatment for opiate addiction, used in folk medicine as a stimulant in low doses, as a medicine for diarrhea, a pain killer, recreational drug and at high doses a sedative.
How is it taken?
After removing the stringy vein the kratom leaves are often chewed in Thailand. You can also chew the dried leaves but most people prefer to crush them or make kratom powder out of them so they become easy to swallow or mixed with juices or put in apple sauce. This helps hide the taste a little because it has a bitter tastes to it. But, the most favorite way is to make it into a tea. It can also be smoked but there is no advantage of smoking it over making it into a tea. The amount that you would need for a typical dose would be too much to be smoked with ease. By boiling the fresh or dried leaves for long periods of time you can prepare a paste like extract to be stored for use later. Small pellets of this extract can be dissolved in hot water and made into a tea or the pellets can be swallowed. To make it more palatable some people like to mix it with black tea or other herbal teas before you drink it. Also, to sweeten it you can add sugar or honey just as you would any hot tea.
What are the effects?
The effect of Kratom depends on how much of it you consume. In a moderate level it can be a stimulant and in a high dose the effect could be sedating. There are stimulant and sedative effects because of the active alkaloids. On the stimulant level the physical and sexual energy is increased, one is more sociable, talkative and friendly. Their ability to do physical work may be improved but some people find this level on the edge rather than being pleasant. On the sedative-euphoric-analgesic level you will be less sensitive to pain, physical or emotionally. You will have a feeling of comfortable pleasure and look and feel calm, almost as if in a dreamy state. The pupils of your eyes will be small and you may have some sweating or itching. You might feel a twinge of nausea but once you lie down that will go away quickly. One of the joys would be to lie in a semi dark room with your favorite music playing and close your eyes and appreciate the feeling of bliss. One foot in dreamland and the other one in reality is called waking dreaming and this is what you want to accomplish. The effects can last up to six hours, however with the higher doses it can last longer, and the next day some people report of having an afterglow about them. It is very important to always start with a lower dose until you know what effect it will have on your body. Some people may experience adverse reactions when using doses that are too strong for you.
What are the Risks and how safe is it?
The greatest risk of taking kratom is falling asleep while doing something dangerous like driving a car. You shouldn't drive once you have taken the kratom because sleep can happen without you realizing it is coming on. Just use your common sense and don’t be using any power tools or climbing any ladders while under the influence and you will be fine, also don’t be cooking and leave a pot on the stove and go to sleep without warning. No pregnant women should take this. There have been no studies made on this so they don’t know if the baby could be born with birth defects or not. Pregnant women should not be taking anything that their doctor doesn't know about.
